does it have a problem as of right now? It’s hard to give an answer unless we know what is running high.

But for the most part make sure your engine is well warmed up, and it’s had its tune up

run clean fuels, change oil, plugs (wires), oil and air filters, fuel filter…run a bottle of EXP through a full tank of gas…..

Which type of smog test do you have to have done? Most times, doing a Motorvac intake/injection system cleaning will get one to pass. This system cleans the converter, oxygen sensors(if equipped). It can be used with a carburetor, also.
If that’s too expensive, find a Chevron gas station, and with less than 1/4 tank, purchase the large bottle of Techron fuel injection cleaner. Once again, you’re trying to get the catalytic converter cleaned out to keep the tailpie emmissions in check. It won’t hurt a carburretor, and will help everything else. Add it to 1/4 tank to get the mixture fairly concentrated, and try to run it as low as you can before adding fuel. Drive it steady speed for 10 miles or so, then hit the inspection station.

I have heard that adding Acetone to the gas will help a failing car pass….haven’t validated this yet though.

Oil change, good compression, proper plugs, all emission equipment intact and a good catalytic converter and it will have a good chance passing.
